Frederick Buechner wrote that, in our journeys, "[w]e search for a self to be...for other selves to love [and]...for work to do."  That search often leads us to places we never imagined we'd go - and away from our deeply buried roots.  Putting down new ones is no easy task, but we must do the digging to deeply belong to our own soil.  Join us in an exploration of your own backyard - what needs tilling, what wants watering, and what is already rich for nurturing growth and beauty.

Robert Benson is a nationally recognized author, raised in the rich soil of writers, publishers, musicians and other artists.  While his travels have taken him from Chicago to California and from editor to marketing director,  his true loves are words and the home he shares with his wife in Nashville.  From the back-garden studio, he writes two kinds of books about one thing - paying attention.  Those books have received favorable reviews in The New York Times, USA Today, Publishers' Weekly, BookPage and others.  Benson graduated from the Academy for Spiritual Formation and is a member of The Friends of Silence & of the Poor.

Both food and spirituality connect us to family, ancestors, culture, faith and values.  Through shared meals, food events and time-honored recipes, those who are no longer with us live on.  Come feast your soul and your stomach by bringing a dish that connects you to at least one of these areas, along with the recipe and story behind it.  The collected recipes and stories will be the beginnings of  Penuel Ridge cookbook.

Judy Morris enjoys the diversity of food and exploring spirituality and loves formal and informal learning.  She grew up with a great cook for a mother and a family that tasted each others' food when dining at restaurants.  Professionally, she is an Orientation and Mobility Instructor for blind students, teaching them skills for independence and pedestrian travel.  She is an active member of Congregation Ohabai Sholom.

We have offered this retreat for more than 10 years, and it's such a wonderful experience that some have attended it every single year.

Join us for this opportunity to celebrate the teachings and life of Howard Thurman through reflection, silence, and sharing.  Listening to audio tapes of Thurman's melodious voice, pregnant pauses, and hearty laughter will bring his passion, wisdom, and talents into our presence.  Whether you are familiar with Thurman's gifts or are interested in an introduction, this will be a day well spent.

Rev. Edwin C. Sanders, II is the Senior servant at Metropolitan Interdenominational Church.

We will begin our New Year's Eve watch with collective silence in the fashion of our Quiet Day observations.  At 5:30, you may stay for supper or depart early enough in the day to venture safely to your next destination.

After gathering around a common table from 5:30 - 6:30, we will segue into a time of guided reflection of what has been and anticipation of what is to come.  At the conclusion of the reflective period, retreatants may return to intentional silence, read, pray, meditate, walk the land or whatever quiet activity is meaningful to them, until they are ready to retire for the evening.  In the morning, we will again gather around a common table and break our fast and being the New Year nourished.

Kathryn Mitchem, a retired Deaconess of the United Methodist Church, is President of the Board of Directors at Penuel Ridge Retreat Center.  She brings more than 30 years experience in leading retreats for spiritual and lay leaders alike.

Quiet Days at Penuel Ridge Retreat Center

Quiet Days are half-day retreats open to anyone who wishes to engage in collective, intentional silence and are held when a 5th Thursday or 5th Sunday occurs in a month.

What to Expect
: We convene in the Dayspring Room at the Main Retreat House. A leader will offer a short reflective period which may include prayer, music, meditation, movement or reading from a chosen body of work. The group then disperses individually onto the land to venture on our 120 acres, which includes two hiking trails, a spring-fed lake, 3 meadows, our chapel - known as The Well, the cascade and any unoccupied cottages. You may read, journal, pray, meditate or simply sit on one of the many benches in quiet contemplation.

What to Bring
: A sack lunch or dinner and any writing materials you may need, such as paper, journals, pens, pencils, etc...

Retreat Fee
: There is no charge to participate in Quiet Days; you are welcomed to make a donation if you wish.
